Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust Bursaries

The Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust (CRET) is a programme of the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation, supports deserving South African learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to continue higher education for employment qualifications improvement. CRET is a non-profit organisation which aims to improve lives and create opportunities through education accessibility and industry growth.

Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

  • Unemployed and full-time students of 16 to 30 year old who wish to pursue undergraduate studies at an accredited South African institution
  • South African citizens with a valid South African ID number
  • Registered and accepted student at an accredited institution
  • Demonstrate good academic, developmental communication skills, leadership, high values and empathetic ability
  • Proven financial need
  • Applicants who are students or wish to pursue studies in relevant and scarce skills as determined by the Department of Labour, SETAs and other labour/economic advisors, will be given preference
  • Students in any year of study who do not have a higher education qualification and is not applying for postgraduate studies are eligible to apply
  • Applications for skills development programmes will be considered based on the Bursary Selection Committee requirements and decision results
  • Distance education and part-time students may apply as long as they meet all the requirements and eligibility
  • Recipients of bursaries or funding from other sources may also be considered based on additional need

How to Apply and Application Details

  • The CRET Bursary Application 2020 must need to be done online. To apply for this bursary. You must need to register an account before you can login and apply.
  • Attach certified copies of the following documents:
    • June and Final Matric results
    • South African ID document
    • Full academic record, if currently at tertiary level
    • Proof of tertiary application or acceptance
    • Parents / guardian’s ID documents
    • Proof of income of parents / guardian

Is the bursary only offered to first-year students?

Students in any year of study are eligible to apply, as long as the applicant does not already hold a higher education qualification and is not applying for postgraduate studies.

Are distance education and part-time students eligible for a bursary?

Yes, provided they are eligible in all other respects.

Are recipients of other bursaries eligible to apply for a CRETbursary?

If an applicant has already been granted a bursary, the CRET programme may consider their application based on additional need. However, any bursary applicant to the CRET Programme is encouraged to have proven application for other bursary opportunities, including NSFAS.

How much is a CRET bursary worth?

Institutions have different cost structures, so the total value of a bursary differs from institution to institution. CRETbursaries are personalised to cover the successful recipient’s essential expenses., based on an individual estimation and needs requirement.

What does the bursary cover?

Expenses covered are dependent on need, but may include tuition, books and other learning materials, accommodation expenses and meals, and where motivated, a small stipend for living expenses, dependent on other expenses The allocation to any individual student is capped at a specific value which is discussed with the student prior to signing of a Bursary Agreement. This agreement is binding for one year.
